The most significant aspect for us is to take good care of the plants. The authenticity of our microclimate and our soils combined with the decisions we make and the methods we use, is what gives our wine its unique character.
This is an agricultural philosophy that places great importance on the esoteric, soulish and spiritual aspect of plants, animals and man.
where we apply agricultural practices such as the selection of local varieties, training the plant, winter pruning or harvesting. All of this, with the importance of the non-physical forces, plays a key role in ensuring that the stocks become strong plants, with healthy and tasty fruits capable of giving our wines authenticity.
The estate operates as an agricultural organism where compost is the central component around which all the natural elements that make it possible revolve:
In order to have a structured soil, we work with sown and spontaneous plant cover, which form underground roots, make holes in the earth, create cavities which allow air to enter to give more life to the soil (fungi, bacteria, insects and worms). This plant cover provides organic matter that the soil transforms into mineral salts that feed the plants.
The compost made of animal manure provides our soils with an extra dose of organic material, which not only feeds the soils, but also creates salts to feed the plants.
In order to avoid predominant diseases, we need a living soil, a highly diverse ecosystem with balanced, strong plants resistant to fungi such as powdery mildew, mildew and Botrytis cinerea (grey mould). Therefore, at Raventós i Blanc we are committed to phytotherapy in order to reduce the use of products such as sulphur and copper sulphate, despite the fact that they are natural and organic.
One very important component of the fertiliser used in our vineyards is fermented manure, which is produced by the animals we have on our farm, including donkeys, pigs, sheep and horses. Furthermore, these animals help get rid of the weeds that grow between the rows of vines and throughout the year help keep the edges of the estate and the woods clear of undergrowth, which reduces the risk of fire, prevents colonisation by the Aleppo pine and recovers the Mediterranean woodland made up of sessile and holm oaks. What is more, horses are used to work our most emblematic plots, Clos del Serral, Plan and Vinya del Mas. As far as possible, we try to avoid using fossil fuel-driven machinery.
The biodynamic preparations are mixtures of mineral, plant and animal substances that, when exposed to nature over a period of time, are returned to their habitat in an altered state.
