Committed to biodynamics

One of the goals Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc set himself when he created the estate's first sparkling wine in 1985 was the re-introduction of traditional agricultural customs

A sustainable and self-sufficient estate

Raventós i Blanc’s commitment to biodynamic agriculture of is based on a strong desire to maintain a sustainable and self-sufficient estate, with a wide-ranging biodiversity of flora and fauna and a rich underground life that gives us a living and structured soil. Our goal is for our soil to be very much alive and more fertile.

This firm commitment to biodynamic agriculture is what enables us to maintain and strengthen the very essence of our soil to create unique and singular wines

The most significant aspect for us is to take good care of the plants. The authenticity of our microclimate and our soils combined with the decisions we make and the methods we use, is what gives our wine its unique character.

Biodynamic agriculture is the most meticulous, deep and spiritual method that can be used to cultivate vineyards

This is an agricultural philosophy that places great importance on the esoteric, soulish and spiritual aspect of plants, animals and man.

The adobe of our vineyards is the fermented manure from the animals we have on the farm
Henhouse close to the estate’s orchard
Working with horses means the soil is not compacted, which allows it to contain more living organisms and makes it more fertile
Donkey manure is a great fertiliser for our soil

"A type of agriculture where the plant is intimately linked to natural life and is a reflection of what takes place in the cosmos"
Rudolf Steiner

The work that directly affects the life of the ground, such as vegetation cover or compost, help to create a healthy and fertile soil

where we apply agricultural practices such as the selection of local varieties, training the plant, winter pruning or harvesting. All of this, with the importance of the non-physical forces, plays a key role in ensuring that the stocks become strong plants, with healthy and tasty fruits capable of giving our wines authenticity.

The estate operates as an agricultural organism where compost is the central component around which all the natural elements that make it possible revolve:

Farm, soil, climate, plant

Plant cover

In order to have a structured soil, we work with sown and spontaneous plant cover, which form underground roots, make holes in the earth, create cavities which allow air to enter to give more life to the soil (fungi, bacteria, insects and worms). This plant cover provides organic matter that the soil transforms into mineral salts that feed the plants.

This, in turn, produces to a wide variety of flora and fauna, which ensures a richer, more balanced ecosystem
with more bees, ladybirds, caterpillars, worms, etc.

Compost

The compost made of animal manure provides our soils with an extra dose of organic material, which not only feeds the soils, but also creates salts to feed the plants.

This composted manure mainly comes from the Pyrenean cows and donkeys on our farm. Horses, sheep and hens
They contain the information on the biodynamic compounds in the compost

Phytotherapy

In order to avoid predominant diseases, we need a living soil, a highly diverse ecosystem with balanced, strong plants resistant to fungi such as powdery mildew, mildew and Botrytis cinerea (grey mould). Therefore, at Raventós i Blanc we are committed to phytotherapy in order to reduce the use of products such as sulphur and copper sulphate, despite the fact that they are natural and organic.

In order to promote aerial biodiversity, we ensure the presence of the natural predators of the European grapevine moth, and can thus reduce the dosages of organic and natural sexual confusion treatment
faced with the increasingly high spider, ladybird and bat populations

Animals

One very important component of the fertiliser used in our vineyards is fermented manure, which is produced by the animals we have on our farm, including donkeys, pigs, sheep and horses. Furthermore, these animals help get rid of the weeds that grow between the rows of vines and throughout the year help keep the edges of the estate and the woods clear of undergrowth, which reduces the risk of fire, prevents colonisation by the Aleppo pine and recovers the Mediterranean woodland made up of sessile and holm oaks. What is more, horses are used to work our most emblematic plots, Clos del Serral, Plan and Vinya del Mas. As far as possible, we try to avoid using fossil fuel-driven machinery.

The biodynamic cycle also includes the hens we keep next to the vegetable garden,
since they create manure for the vines, which is used during the compost seasons

Biodynamic preparations

The biodynamic preparations are mixtures of mineral, plant and animal substances that, when exposed to nature over a period of time, are returned to their habitat in an altered state.

They nourish and activate different elements that are found in our soils and which are also essential for the good growth of the plant
Their use depends on the different cycles that surround us
