Ancestral 100% Montonega
The autumn was drier than usual and the weather was mild, but the high rainfall of the previous cycle allowed the soil to reserve water. For a long period of time, Can Sumoi’s vines reserved energy in the roots and wood until the first frost of the winter, on December 3, when the leaves fell and the plant went into winter rest. The winter and spring remaind dry but fresh.
As usual, pruning was done in February to delay sprouting and prevent early spring frosts on the most tender shoots.
Despite the drought in July and August, the occasional spring rains and the water reserves accumulated in the soil -due to the high rainfall of the 2020 vintage and the snowfall on January 9 and 10 of this year in the estate- the grapes ripened in a balanced manner with good vegetative development of the plant, keeping it fresh and healthy without water stress or fungal diseases.
The harvest began on August 16. It was brought forward by the heat wave of July and August, which raised the thermometers to 39ºC. Rainfall was 330.4 mm, much lower than in 2020 (795 mm). The average temperature was 14ºC.
The vintage 2021 brings us a vintage that combined with the location of the estate (600 m above sea level) and the dry weather will give us concentration and roundness in the wines.
The estate is planted only with local grapes.
The soils of the estate were developed from copper-coloured, ochre and brown material which corresponds to the Montmell Formation, which is made up of sediment formed between 100 and 113 million years ago in the Cretaceous period; there are few soils as ancient as these on the Iberian Peninsula.
Recovery of 20 Ha of vineyard with an average age of 50 years.
Strong commitment to recover native varieties Parellada, Macabeu, Sumoll, Garnatxa and Xarel·lo for all our wines.
