Garnatxa - Sumoll 2023

Garnatxa - Sumoll 2023

50% Garnatxa - 50% Sumoll

2023

After two dry vintages, the cycle continued with an extremely dry autumn, where the soil did not receive much water. The autumn was warm, and the drought extended until December, even as many leaves fell due to the lack of water.

In winter, the cold months of January and February arrived, allowing the plants to have a good winter rest during the pruning period. The winter was extremely dry, exacerbating the typical dry period in our Mediterranean climate.

The beginning of spring continued without rain, affecting the vine, fruits, and forest, reflected in dried-up streams, ponds, and springs on the Can Sumoi estate. This led to a strong attack by roe deer on the newly sprouted vine shoots, consuming up to 90% of the shoots.

Late May and early spring rains brought about a strong resurgence of the vine and good vegetative growth in the deep-rooted old vines. However, newly planted vines experienced slower development.

The summer was dry, with some occasional rain and extreme heat from August 10 to 25, with temperatures reaching 40°C, even during the harvest. The sporadic rains contributed to good grape development. Harvesting began on September 6 on the estate. The grapes were extremely healthy, with a 60-80% loss of production due to roe deer attacks on grape shoots. There was a good balance of sugar content and acidity, resulting in concentrated grapes due to low yields.

The new 2023 vintage: Concentration and freshness. We have a very good balance between maturity and freshness. At this time the wines are expressive with notes of fermentation fruits that will soon develop towards aromas more characteristic of the terroir and the variety.

The estate is planted only with local grapes.

The soils of the estate were developed from copper-coloured, ochre and brown material which corresponds to the Montmell Formation, which is made up of sediment formed between 100 and 113 million years ago in the Cretaceous period; there are few soils as ancient as these on the Iberian Peninsula.

Recovery of 20 Ha of vineyard with an average age of 50 years.

Strong commitment to recover native varieties Montinega, Sumoll, Garnatxa and Xarel·lo for all our wines.

Coupage 50% Garnatxa - 50% Sumoll

Coupage of two complementary Mediterranean varieties, the Sumoll: wild fruits, rusticity, finesse, electric / acidic; with the Garnatxa: red fruits, roundness, elegance, silky, an excellent blend.

Our project is based on respect for the environment, natural winemaking and biodynamics

We grow 100% organic

The Can Sumoi vineyards were covered with natural fertilizer, they were worked with expert and careful hands; and recovered to make natural high-altitude wines. Management of the forest and the wildlife was also carried out to recuperate the biodiversity. The Can Sumoi wines were born in 2017

Vineyards with spontaneous vegetation covers, which give biodiversity, fertility and life to the soil. We do the short pruning. Use of herbal as herbal medicine to minimize the use of copper and sulfur. Control of lobesia botrana due to sexual confusion. Maturation controls prior to the harvest. Manual harvest and all pressed in the cellar.

We also eamwork with local farmers, organic certificates.

Our mission at Can Sumoi is the production of natural high altitude wines with the least intervention in all viticulture and winemaking processes. Manual harvest and all pressed in the cellar.

Can Sumoi wines are organic, and natural wines with less than 30mg/L of sulfites.

Organic because of the organic viticulture in our vineyards, with manual harvest, all pressed in the winery and only natural yeasts.

Natural due to an elaboration without any oenological additive added during its vinification (no enzymes, no sugars, no jellies, no tannins or copper). Only a minimum quantity of sulfites in bottling when necessary.

In Can Sumoi wines -following the recent French Vin Méthode Nature regulations- there are no more than 30mg/L of sulfites in total.
